OHCHR reporting on the right to conscientious objection to military service
With the participation of Daniel Moegster of the UN OHCHR
Organised by the Quaker UN Office, Connection e.V. and War Resisters’ International
The latest report on Conscientious objection to military service by the Office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights (A/HRC/56/30) is being presented to the 56th session of the UN Human Rights Council in July.
The report provides recommendations on human rights compliant legal and policy frameworks on this issue.
In particular it addresses:
• recognition of the right to conscientious objection to military service in domestic law;
• application procedures;
• genuine alternatives to military service;
• promotion of conscientious objection and processing and
• recognition of refugee status for conscientious objectors.
Daniel Moegster of the OHCHR will introduce the report.
There will then be an opportunity for questions from the participants, and a discussion about, for instance
1. using the report for domestic advocacy, and raising issues in different countries,
2. giving the report and its recommendations publicity and
3. exploring possible next steps at the UN.
