On December 6, from 2:00 PM to 4:00 PM (Local time Warsaw), a protest took place in front of the Lithuanian Embassy (Al. Ujazdowskie 14) to draw attention to Lithuania’s unjust policies toward Belarusian citizens.

Why Is This Important?

Since 2020, more than 1,500 Belarusians have been recognized as a threat to Lithuania’s national security. It seems that such decisions are made at random, which worries those Belarusians who fought and continue to fight against the regime of Aliaksandr Lukashenka, because as a result of such decisions Lithuania deports Belarusians at least to third countries, and sometimes directly to Belarus.

We are particularly concerned about the case of Vasily Veremeichik, who, after being recognised as a ‘threat to Lithuania’s national security’, was forced to leave the Schengen zone and forcibly deported to Belarus. There he faces the death penalty.

These actions by Lithuania violate:

  • The European Convention on Human Rights;
  • The International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights;
  • The UN Convention Against Torture;
  • The EU Charter of Fundamental Rights.

Deporting individuals to a country where they face torture, persecution, or the death penalty is a blatant breach of international law.

Financial Gain vs. Human Dignity

Lithuania has benefited financially from its collaboration with the Lukashenko regime and from taxes paid by Belarusian businesses and emigrants. However, instead of protecting those fleeing repression, Lithuania continues policies that humiliate and endanger these individuals, limiting their rights and exposing them to harm.

Our Demands:

  1. Stop the deportation of Belarusian citizens from Lithuania to Belarus.

  2. Launch an independent investigation into cases of discrimination and unjust labeling of Belarusians as “threats to national security.”

  3. Adhere to international commitments to protect human rights.

  4. End persecution of Belarusians in Lithuania based on their nationality.

 

Why Participate?

Human rights are universal and not dependent on nationality or citizenship. Lithuania, as an EU member state, is obligated to uphold and protect the rights of all people, not violate them.
