Three years ago, Russia launched a war against Ukraine, leading to massive destruction and tragedies. However, alongside these events, hundreds of thousands of people in Russia, Belarus, and Ukraine have refused to participate in military actions. What is the current state of their right to conscientious objection? What protection is available to them?

On March 3, 2025, at 6:00 PM CET, War Resisters’ International and Connection e.V. will host a webinar where leading activists and human rights defenders will discuss the situation of conscientious objectors and deserters from Russia, Belarus, and Ukraine, as well as developments in asylum mechanisms for them. The webinar will be held in English, with simultaneous interpretation into Spanish, French, and German.

  • Olga Karatch (Our House, Belarus) – on the situation of Belarusian conscientious objectors.
  • Yurii Sheliazhenko (Ukrainian Pacifist Movement) – on the status of Ukrainian conscientious objectors.
  • Rudi Friedrich (Connection e.V.) – on developments in asylum protection for conscientious objectors and deserters.

After the presentations, participants will have the opportunity to ask questions and take part in discussions.
