If statistics are to be believed, the world is intensively preparing for war, and this can be clearly seen in the dynamics of the Global Peace Index (GPI) figures developed by the Institute for Economics and Peace (IEP). This is one of the world’s most important indicators reflecting the level of peace on the planet.

Compiled on the basis of 23 qualitative and quantitative indicators, it covers 163 countries representing 99.7% of the world’s population. The Index measures the state of the world in three key areas: the level of public security, the extent of ongoing internal and international conflict, and the degree of militarisation.

According to the 2024 results, the global peace situation has deteriorated, which is a worrying signal for the global community. Ninety-seven countries around the world have experienced a deterioration in the level of peacefulness – the highest number since the Global Peace Index began in 2008. The main reasons for this decline are the ongoing wars in Gaza and Ukraine, which have the greatest impact on the global level of peacefulness.

War and conflict: the scale of destruction

Currently, 92 countries are involved in military conflicts, both inside and outside their borders. This is also a record high for the entire Index period. The situation in Ukraine and Gaza, against the backdrop of global conflicts, continues to capture the world’s attention. These wars account for nearly three-quarters of all conflict-related deaths in 2024. Ukraine accounts for 83,000 of the 162,000 deaths recorded as a result of war, making it the bloodiest conflict in recent decades.

If the rate of deaths continues through 2025, the world could face the highest number of war deaths since the 1994 Rwandan genocide.

Militarisation and military capabilities

One of the most worrying factors is the increase in militarisation, which recorded the most significant deterioration since the Index was launched. 108 countries have become more militarised, indicating a continuing global arms race.

The economic impact of violence

The global economic impact of violence is also alarming. In 2023, the global economic impact of violence is $19.1 trillion, equal to 13.5% of global GDP. This money is spent on armaments and wars, instead of improving people’s lives and investing in economic development, education, health and social protection.

Global implications for refugees

Conflict and violence lead to massive displacement of people. In 2024, 110 million people will be refugees or internally displaced, a devastating result of ongoing wars and violent conflicts. 16 countries are currently hosting more than half a million refugees, increasing pressure on humanitarian systems and infrastructure.

Top 5 most peaceful countries in 2024

Despite the general trend of deteriorating global peacefulness, a few countries continue to set an example for others. Iceland, Ireland, Austria, New Zealand, Singapore and Iceland make up the top 5 most peaceful countries in the world in 2024. These countries demonstrate that it is possible to maintain peace and stability even in the face of global challenges.

Conclusion

The results of the Global Peace Index 2024 confirm that the world is going through one of the most disturbing phases in recent decades. The scale of conflict, increased militarisation and the economic consequences of violence are becoming an integral part of the global reality. The global community must take active measures to prevent further conflict, reduce military spending and promote a culture of peace and security if we are to prevent global catastrophes and safeguard the future for generations to come.
