The last 10 days were marked with mass detention of people in all cities in Belarus. The composition of the detainees is very diverse, but they are united by one thing – all those detained expressed a doubt in the relevance of state statistics on COVID-19 or the correctness of the state course of Alexander Lukashenko, including the holding of a military parade on the 9th of May.
Over the past 10 days, 118 people have been repressed, detained, fined and imprisoned.
The total number of fees received by peaceful activists and journalists is 2902,5 Belarusian rubles – an equivalent of 1097 Euro or 1188 USD. The majority received the fine under the article 23.34 Administrative Code “Violation of the order of organization or conduct of public events”
Out of these 118 individuals:
30 were detained for 2-3 days before appearing in courts, and they had received 81 days of detention in total.
19 persons sentenced for 7-15 days of administrative arrest. Total number of days of administrative arrests is 172 days, on average this is 9 days of imprisonment per person.
Of the repressed people are 12 women; among them are two mothers-328 who spoke up publicly about unfair court sentences that bounded their children for 10-15 years of imprisonment for minor drug-related offenses. One female activist received 6 days of administrative arrest. 3 women activists are detained for 7 days, including 2-3 days of pre-court detention. 1 woman was pressured by her employer to take a non-paid leave from work.
2 first-aid doctors were sentenced to 7 days of detention for giving an interview where they claimed that the official statistics on COVID-19 were fake. When they are released from detention they will lose their job. One of the doctors has two young children and it will be very difficult to find work in a small town of Lida for them, which will put the family in a very difficult financial situation. This all because of the doctor sharing the truth. The arrest of these doctors is an act of intimidation to make sure that other doctors in the country are scared of arrests and dismissals and stay silent about the fact that the epidemic of COVID-19 in the country is growing and the situation is bad.
7 journalists were detained, from them 3 journalists had received 8 days of detention before appearing in courts in total.
One the 6thof May one journalist from Russia was deprived of accreditation and deported from Belarus within 24 hours for reporting on fresh massive graves for those died of COVID-19 in Stolbtsy. In this report the journalist claimed that the authority was hiding the real mortally rate caused by the COVID-19, partly by allowing some of the numbers of deaths not making it to the official statistics.
13 YouTube bloggers were detained for 65 days of detention in total.
