This is happening directly on the Belarusian border and it’s been going on all summer.
The “Usovo” border outpost, officially named after V.M. Usov, who died defending it in 1941, is part of the Grodno Border Guard Group. It is situated in a unique, once quiet and picturesque area nestled between Lithuania and Poland. The border lies just 700 meters from the outpost, and 2 kilometers away is the Rudawka (PL)–Lesnaya (BY) tourist border crossing at the Kuzhynets Lock of the Augustów Canal. This canal attracts kayakers and canoeists, offering access to the Belarusian section of the waterway.
Although these areas were once pristine and serene, they have recently become a strategic zone for Lukashenko’s regime to target Poland and Lithuania using groups of migrants from the Middle East and Africa as tools of hybrid warfare.
It remains unclear whether these events are connected, but near the border, the body of a border guard soldier was discovered. According to official authorities, the cause of death showed signs of suicide.
The young man was 21 years old and had served for about eight months. He was undergoing mandatory military service and had already achieved the rank of junior sergeant.
Naturally, the young man was described positively, but no further details were provided.
The Belarusian border claims more than just Belarusian lives. On May 28, 2024, an Asian refugee attempting to cross into Poland from Belarus attacked a Polish border guard with an improvised spear. The guard, who was holding a shield at a breach in the border fence, was critically injured. Despite being airlifted to Warsaw, his life could not be saved. The border guard, Mateusz Sitek, was also just 21 years old.
These incidents occurred 300 kilometers apart.
